| Date From | 1895 | Staff outside Chalmers, general grocers. Also visible is the sign board of ''Spiers, Iron Plane Maker''. The bearded gent is Stewart Spiers who was born in Ayr in 1819. Having started out as a cabinet maker he went on to run a business making iron planes at 10 River Street from 1845 until his death in1899. He invented many iron planes which sold world wide. |
