Bankhead Colliery

| Date From | | Workforce pose in front of the pithead here at Bankhead Colliery, Muirkirk. It was also known as Auldhouseburn Colliery and was closed in 1911. It was run by the Cairntable Gas Coal Company.
In 1898 the Colliery was the scene of a disaster when three men lost their lives when an inrush of water flooded the pit. Robert Blyth and Robert Gibson were awarded the Royale Humane Society Silver medal for risking their lives to save others. |
