Barytes Mine

| Date From | 1935 | Photo shows pit head gear with four men in the case waiting to descend. The men are J. Gibson, E Arthur , T Ballantyne, J. McMurdo. The mine produced barium sulphate [barytes] which was used as a filter by the paint and paper industries, as well as in ceramics and glass production. A quartz like mineral, it varies in colour from pure white[high quality] to light pink. |
