Haymaking, Loudoun Castle

| Date From | 1890 | 10 estate workers, including children, in front of Loudoun Castle. Most of them carry hay or grass rakes. Loudoun Castle was built between 1804 and 1811 for the 2nd Earl and his wife, Moira {Countess of Loudoun]. The splendour of the house, and the political and social connections of the family, earned it the name of the Windsor of Scotland. The photograph is probably of workers of the home farm, which would have been a typical late 19th century mixed farm, with beef and dairy cattle, sheep, and a variety of crops including wheat, oats, grass and root crops for animal feed. Some produce would have been for consumption in the house and any surplus would have been sold on the open market. |
