There were various isolation hospitals throughout for people suffering from infectious diseases, such as TB. Towards the end of the 19th century Ayr County Council introduced a wider scheme, whereby a full time medical officer supervised health care throughout the landward areas of Ayrshire. Some of the burghs, which could remain as separate health authorities, chose to be included with the County. In 1948 the National Health Service was formed to provide free medical and dental treatment for everyone. Images have been allocated into the following categories and subcategories. Until 1889, public health was controlled by part time local medical officers. There were various isolation hospitals throughout for people suffering from infectious diseases, such as TB.
