Ayrshire has a long and multi-faceted involvement with the textile industry. In common with all pre-industrial communities, there was always home-based manufacture of woollen goods, shoes and finer goods such as lace. Linen, too, was produced on a small scale, especially during the late 18th Century, when the government was trying to encourage flax growing.

The second half of the 18th Century saw an increasing mechanisation of the various textile industries, brought about by the invention of machines which could replicate the work of many people, and the development of the power sources to run these machines.
