General view of Blackwood and Mortons 7 storey carpet factory in Burnside, Kilmarnock. The manufacture of carpets in Kilmarnock began in 1777 and grew rapidly in the 19th century, with the leading firm being Gregory, Thomson & Co. Robert Blackwood and Gavin Morton formed their partnership in 1908 and it quickly grew to be the biggest carpet business in the town, and well-known worldwide. The mill shown here was built in 1935. The company was taken over in 1982 and the site was virtually cleared by 1985.

postcard. The picture was taken in 1937.
