The late 18th and early 19th century brought improved road communications to Ayrshire. From the 1840s to 1900 (approx.) a network of railways was created to offer an alternative means of transport. In the 20th century the trams came to Ayr and Kilmarnock for a short period of time. Also in the 20th century, the coming of the motor car has meant a revival for the road system. No short introduction to Ayrshire transport would be complete without references to Ayrshire harbours and Prestwick Airport.
